Was he trying to ask me out?

I've just started talking to a guy from one of my classes at university who catches the same bus with me after a tutorial. He's pretty good looking and we seem to have a lot in common, but he's kind of shy. We'd been talking on the bus and in the tutorials for a couple of weeks when last week he asked "what are you doing tomorrow", to which I responded that I was catching a plane to visit my hometown for mid-semester vacation. He asked "what are you doing after the holidays?" and I kind of deflected the question by pretending he meant to ask what I was doing during the holidays. Was he trying to ask me out or am I reading too much into this? (Still not sure if he's my type or not). Please help, I've always been so terrible at reading signals.
