When you're speaking spanish...?

My spanish teacher told us that when your speaking spanish and you want to say "My eyes are brown" or "My hair is brown" you can use "Mi pelo/mis ojos es/son maron(es)" or "Mi pelo/mis ojos es/son de color cafe" but you can't use "Mi pelo es cafe" or "Mis ojos son cafes" because when you say it without the 'de color' you're saying "My eyes are coffee" or "My hair is coffee." Now, my spanish teacher learned spanish over last summer so I don't really know if he was right or not, he's wrong about a lot of cultural stuff like that. So I was just asking to be sure, can you use "Mis ojos son cafes" or "Mi pelo es cafe"?
